S1, E88: Disruptive Advertising/ Authenticity Wins - Jacob Baadsgaard
The concept of authenticity has become increasingly important in our fast-paced world. In a recent conversation with entrepreneur Jacob Baadzgaard, we explored how being true to oneself can transform both personal relationships and business success. What struck me most about our dialogue was the realization that midlife crises are happening earlier than ever before – people in their 20s and 30s are already questioning the paths they've dutifully followed.
Jacob's journey is particularly illuminating. After building a successful marketing agency called Disruptive Advertising, he found himself at a crossroads both professionally and personally. Despite achieving conventional success markers – the career, the marriage, the family – something was missing. The pivotal moment came during marital struggles when he realized he wasn't showing up authentically in his relationship because of deep-seated self-judgment. This revelation led him to therapy and a profound journey of self-discovery.
What Jacob discovered mirrors what many of us experience: we often hide in our thoughts rather than fully engaging with life's experiences. "The mind is an awesome sidekick but a poor driver," he noted. This insight highlights how we intellectualize to avoid feeling emotions that might be uncomfortable but ultimately necessary for growth. We become so focused on outcomes and future planning that we miss the present moment – the only place where life actually happens.
One particularly powerful concept Jacob shared is that "it's not an adventure until you don't know what's next." This perspective transforms uncertainty from something to fear into something to embrace. When we face our fears and step into the unknown, life often surprises us with experiences our minds could never have anticipated. Jacob's fourth child, born after he and his wife worked through marital difficulties, serves as his daily reminder of the beautiful possibilities that exist on the other side of fear.
In business, Jacob observed a similar pattern. Many entrepreneurs and marketers struggle with the same core issue: developing self-clarity and confidence. Without understanding what makes them unique, they create businesses and marketing strategies that lack differentiation. This led him to develop Disruptive University and write his forthcoming book "Authenticity Wins," both focused on helping people discover their unique strengths, values, and purpose.
Perhaps the most challenging aspect of authenticity is learning to trust that we are enough to handle whatever life brings. This requires letting go of the need to control outcomes or protect ourselves and others from life's inevitable challenges. As Jacob eloquently put it, "Do I believe I'm enough to deal with whatever life brings? And the next question is: do I believe everyone else is enough?" When we answer yes to both questions, we free ourselves to live more genuinely and create space for others to do the same.
The journey toward authenticity isn't a one-time event but rather a continuous practice. It involves recognizing when we're judging our past selves or choices, acknowledging new awareness without shame, and moving forward with this new understanding. Like building sandcastles that will eventually be washed away, we can fully engage in life's experiences knowing that change is inevitable – and that's precisely what makes the journey worthwhile.
